The oddity that is this Wonder Woman sequel is difficult to describe as it's still somewhat mind-blowing that Jenkins along with co-writers Geoff Johns (a former executive at DC Entertainment and a prolific writer and producer) and Dave Callaham (seasoned franchise screenwriter) submitted this screenplay to Warner Brothers with the confidence not only that it would be approved, but that it was good while it's even more confounding that Warner greenlit this $200 million experiment. In other words, it's trying to make the simple idea at its center feel more complex and therefore more sophisticated when in reality said execution simply feels perplexing. It's almost as if the film actively goes out of its way not to necessarily make its message more convoluted, but rather like it's trying to do or say more than what is actually on its mind. There is a wealth of good intent imbued on the project as writer/director Patty Jenkins returns to continue crafting the titular character into more of a beacon of hope than ever, but come the end of this bloated two and half hour epic it's nearly impossible to see how anyone associated with the project could have mistaken it for quality rather than recognizing the bizarre (and often times extremely cheesy) choices that were made, not to mention the incredibly preposterous nature of it all. It's not that it's soul-crushingly bad, but it's just not good and it for one reason or another feels like it's completely mistaken silly for entertaining. It's not a perfect sequel, but it's a good sequel. The core story, however, does have some issues, but not enough that these other factors can't elevate it. The Cold War setting is unique, the action is good, and the performances are excellent. And that's the biggest thing I can say with Wonder Woman 1984, there is fun to be had. Nothing on par with the no man's land scene in the first one, but still, there is fun to be had here. It's also just nice to see her kick ass, and this is a gorgeously directed movie with some pretty stellar action scenes. She has a stronger understanding of this world now, and it's nice to see her development. But what really pulls the movie ahead above all else is, of course, Wonder Woman herself. I know they really wanted him back, and he's great in the movie, but the way he's brought back via bodily hijacking is just a bit too creepy and forced. I would really have liked to see more of her in full Cheetah but she's pretty good. For the other villain, Kristen Wiig, she's pretty good. However, Pedro Pascal as the antagonist using the stone elevates the whole thing to a great level of fun. The weird wishing stone artifact that the film surrounds itself on is confusing at best and all too often just plain silly. The morals of the film are a little wonky, and just the very nature of the conflict is a bit strange. Well this movies reception really went all over the place didn't it? For me though, while it's not as good as the first one, it is still an enjoyable sequel that is a great stage for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Rating: PG-13 (Violence|Sequences of Action) But soon, Diana will have to muster all of her strength, wisdom and courage as she finds herself squaring off against Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah, a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility. Though she's come into her full powers, she maintains a low profile by curating ancient artifacts, and only performing heroic acts incognito. The holiday coda was a family affair for Gadot and director Patty Jenkins: Jenkins’ 12-year-old son Asa appeared in the scene as well as Gadot’s husband Jaron Varsano and their two daughters, Alma, 9, and Maya, 3.Diana Prince lives quietly among mortals in the vibrant, sleek 1980s - an era of excess driven by the pursuit of having it all. After the big climax, an epilogue found heroine Diana Prince at the holidays, enjoying a winter wonderland of falling snow, playing children and peace while also being able to move on with her life. The superhero sequel “Wonder Woman 1984” (in theaters and streaming on HBO Max) featured Gal Gadot saving the world from magically wishing itself into nuclear armageddon. That’s because a check includes your bank, routing number and account number all in one place, but since the account holder writes “void” on it, it cannot be used. Additionally, you might need to submit a voided check for automated loan or bill payments. If you don’t feel comfortable carrying large amounts of cash around, a checkbook is necessary in these situations. Specifically, this study asked: 1) In what ways does engaging with a transmedia story influence how preservice ELA teachers perceive transmedia stories? 2) In what ways does reading a transmedia story influence how preservice ELA teachers perceive implementing transmedia stories in the classroom? and 3) In what ways does creating a transmedia extension text influence how preservice ELA teachers perceive implementing transmedia stories in the classroom? To investigate these questions, the study used Hawley- Turner and Hicks’ (2015) Connected Reading Model as a theoretical framework to conceptualize transmedia stories as a new literacy that encourages different ways of encountering, engaging with, and evaluating texts. The current study addressed this research need by investigating how preservice ELA teachers perceived, read, and created transmedia stories and how they saw implementing these texts in an ELA classroom. Research is needed on how preservice ELA teachers engage with transmedia stories and how this relates to their perceptions of teaching this new literacy. While researchers, scholars, and educators have begun to theorize about how such stories might benefit literacy and ELA education, little empirical research exists as to how these narratives are perceived by teachers and how this new literacy might actually be implemented in a classroom. Theoretical research has suggested that transmedia stories can be used in the ELA classroom to teach both traditional literacies and 21st century literacies. Transmedia stories are an emerging twenty-first century storytelling form where a narrative is told over multiple texts and media platforms and is often extended further by reader contributions. More research is needed, however, on the relationship between literacy experiences and pedagogical thinking for preservice teachers implementing new literacies such as transmedia stories. The personal literacy experiences English Language Arts (ELA) teachers have are an important factor in shaping their pedagogical thinking about literacy. I argue that although the games are unable to influence the narrative of existing Discworld books, they nevertheless constitute a transmedia relationship with the text, based on Jason Mittell’s (2012-13) ‘what if’ concept. It is via L-space that all books are connected (quoting the ones before them, and influencing the ones that come after) (1989: 11)’. Drawing on user reviews of the Discworld games from the board game website Board Game Geek, I suggest that these games fulfil a similar function to Pratchett’s textual concept of L-Space the idea that ‘Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass, and on that simple equation rests the whole of L-space. Existing outside of the ‘official’ canon of the novels, as well as television and animated adaptations, the games nevertheless utilise information contained within those texts to affect game play. Quirky and original characters, a labyrinthine plot and numerous witty one-liners make this a treat for Discworld fans and 'unintitated' theatregoes alike. This paper draws on Jonathan Gray’s (2006, 2010, 2013) work on paratexts and Matthew Hills’ (2004) work on Discworld geography, to examine the role that the Discworld board games play in affecting fans’ meaning-making processes. Some of the readme files may not exactly reflect Macintosh AutoCAD usage. You will find all instructions/descriptions in the “ readme” files as well as in the header of the Airfoil. exe” is a small text processor, Tex-Edit Plus, which can rapidly exchange the “tab” character for a “space” character and quickly go unless you have one of the Mac programs that simulate a PC. The only thing that you Mac users may not be able to run is the “Tab_2_Space. The Autolisp routines and data files will work on a Macintosh if someone happens to be running AutoCAD Release12 (the last version for the Mac). but it's nice to have because it saves so much time and the possibility of making errors when editing data by hand. Most all airfoil data is space delimited, so 99% of the time, the utility is not needed. This is needed sometimes because Autolisp does not have the ability to recognize the tab character in data files. exe” utility takes a whole batch (folder full of) of airfoil data which is tab delimited and replaces all of the tabs with spaces. Other data requirements are easy to check and correct. This takes care of the only real quirk in using Airfoil. This utility was written by a friend of mine for one of his projects and he kindly modified it for our use here. Rather than having to manually edit out tabs in the data files, I have included a handy utility which can take a whole batch of files and convert all of the tab characters in all of the files into spaces and then place these converted files into a new folder. For some reason, Autolisp cannot recognize the “tab” character, so it is not possible for the routine to sort this out. Inconveniences: Some airfoil coordinate data is tab delimited. The airfoil data files were gleaned from a number of web-based resources. exe” file contains the program, the “ readme” file, and also several folders of airfoil data. I assume that since the original program has been in the public domain for quite some time, that the original author won't mind the improvements. The original author is noted at the beginning of the file, but so far all efforts to find him have been futile. I re-wrote some of the code and added to it in order to make it work easily. The original program was downloaded from the web back in 1995 and was deficient in several ways. lsp is also a text file so it may be scrutinized easily if you wish. txt.Very fast, very simple.įor more info, see the “” file. All that is needed is the airfoils’ X & Y coordinate data. An airfoil can be selected and drawn to any length of chord and thickness desired. After the program is loaded, just type the word “airfoil” any time you desire and the routine is running. When designing a model plane in AutoCAD, the routine can call up and draw airfoils directly into the drawing without having to use any other programs or intermediate steps. No fancy installation/removal steps are needed. It can be installed or removed almost as easily as moving or deleting a folder. This is a routine written entirely in Autolisp, so it runs within AutoCAD without depending on any external resources. I have an airfoil plotting program written for AutoCAD users who design their own planes using that program. If you use AutoCAD and want to draw airfoils then this program is an absolute must for you. During Sleeping Dragons Wake, Claugiyliamatar was possessed by the wraith of the ancient dracolich Chardansearavitriol, also known as Ebondeath, which now loyally serves the worshipers of Myrkul (see “Mere of Dead Men”). The abandoned lair of the green dragon Claugiyliamatar, nicknamed the Old Gnawbone, is found in these woods. This ancient forest tucked behind the Sword Mountains contains the ruins of bygone dwarven civilizations. Recently, efforts have been made to keep the road safe, with light patrols of guards on horseback moving between Neverwinter and Leilon. For years, the stretch of road south of Neverwinter fell into disuse because of frequent monster attacks. This highway hugs the coast, connecting Neverwinter to the coastal cities of Luskan to the north and Waterdeep to the south. These rocky, windswept hills are dotted with old mines that have become infested with monsters. The Triboar Trail runs right through this abandoned town, which was sacked by barbarians years ago and now lies in ruins. While the Sun passes overhead, the tilt of the Earth is zero relative to the Sun, which means that Earth’s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun. (Note, however, that the Earth never orbits upright, but is always tilted on its axis by about 23.5 degrees.) →See your personalized Sun rise and set calculator. The amount of daylight each day will continue to increase until the summer solstice in June, during which the longest period of daylight occurs. On the March equinox, the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere receive roughly equal amounts of sunlight neither hemisphere is tilted more toward or away from the Sun than the other.Īlthough in most locations (the North Pole and Equator being exceptions) the amount of daylight had been increasing each day after the winter solstice, after the spring equinox, many places will experience more daylight than darkness in each 24-hour day. Imagine standing on the equator the Sun would pass directly overhead on its way north. It’s called the “celestial” equator because it’s an imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator. In the Northern Hemisphere, the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox across the globe) occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator going south to north. The civil calendar date of the equinox continues to shift every year. If you thought that the spring equinox only ever occurred on March 21, you may be dating yourself. This falls on a Monday and is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2023, the March equinox happens on March 20, at 5:24 P.M. This date marks the “spring equinox” in the Northern Hemisphere. What IS the spring equinox and is it always on the 20th? We focus on economic profit for firms and extend our analysis to cities and sectors of economic activityĪlthough a variety of definitions exist, we define superstar to mean a firm, sector, or city that has a substantially greater share of income than peers and is pulling away from those peers over time.įor firms, our metric is economic profit, a measure of a firm’s invested capital multiplied by its return above the cost of capital. We find a higher churn rate among superstar firms compared to cities, indicating higher levels of persistence among superstar cities. In addition to capturing a greater share of income and pulling away from peers, superstars exhibit relatively higher levels of digitization greater labor skill and innovation intensity more connections to global flows of trade, finance, and services and more intangible assets than do their peers. Relative to peers, superstars share several common characteristics. We find superstars exist not only among firms but among sectors and cities as well, although the trend is most evident among cities and firms. At the same time, we draw some preliminary implications for leaders. We also examine what characteristics, similarities, differences, and linkages can be observed across firms, sectors, and cities and what economic effects and questions they raise for further research. We assess the extent to which a superstar effect can be observed in the global economy in three arenas-firms, sectors, and cities-and inspect the dynamics, including churn and changing characteristics, in each of these arenas. Our research aims to fill some of the empirical and data gaps, take a global perspective, and examine the issue beyond just firms. Yet questions remain, and much of the evidence is still inconclusive as well as incomplete. This has been accompanied by a growing body of research examining various aspects and drivers of superstar effects in the economy. There is much discussion about “superstar” firms and “superstar effects” in reaction to the rapid growth of very large global companies. |
